New Founds: Musicals!

Oh,  a new feature? Yes! New Founds is a feature where I share my new interests that I’m currently obsessed with! I’m going to launch this feature with a Musicals Edition!

I am not new to the world of musicals! During these past few months, the only songs I’ve been listening to are from musicals. My first musical obsession was Hamilton (still am and been obsessed since 2016). As I got obsessed with Hamilton, I am founding more and more musicals to be obsessed with and I’m gonna share two new obsessions!

Based on the 1988 cult film of the same name, Heathers tells the story of Veronica Sawyer after she joined the Heathers, the famous clique in her school, and how her life change when she met JD, her boyfriend.

This musical is just so amazing! It features such great actors like Barrett Wilbert Weed (Veronica Sawyer) who has such an amazing voice, Ryan McCartan (JD), Jessica Keenan Wynn (Heather Chandler) who is just perfect for the role, Elle McLemore (Heather McNamara) and Alice Lee (Heather Duke) who is about to star on Wish Upon. Not only that, the musical has really really great songs such Dead Girl Walking, Candy Store and Freeze Your Brain. The musical takes the story of the film and improves it which the definitely did. I recommend you all to give this musical a listen. This is an amazing musical and even though there’s still an active fandom, I’m sad that it’s not as popular as other musicals.

Loosely based on the 2000 film, Bring It On focuses on Campbell Davis and her cheerleading journey. It also focuses on the competitive world of cheerleading and rivalries.

I found this musical because Elle McLemore also showed in it. What I appreciate in this musical is the amazing songs and the choreography! Taylor Louderman, Jason Gotay, Adrienne Warren and Elle McLemore (of course) are such amazing actors. They sing their songs with such greatness while also doing choreography. Speaking of choreography, the dances were truly dazzling! The songs were so so so good (Alternative term was lit). There’s a recording of the songs in Spotify so please listen to it!

Well, I hope you enjoy this new feature in the blog. Also, sorry for not being active as I’ve been busy. It’s just the first month of my school year and it’s already hectic and add the revamp of The Artistics and you’ve got yourself a messy schedule! Anyways, I’ll see you soon! Bye!

Show and Tell // A Life of a Student-Blogger

Hello there!

If you’re going to meet one of my classmates and ask him or her the question “What do you remember about Jerrod?”, I’m 100 percent sure that they’re going to answer “he’s a blogger”. My whole class knows that I’m a blogger and it was (emphasize on the ‘was’ because it’s not anymore) a major buzz around my circle of friends.

One thing they don’t know is that it’s so freaking hard to manage your blog and school. It’s definitely a challenge that I’m still trying to figure out especially for me since I also join extracurricular activities in school and I run an online magazine so in total, I manage 4 things: school, blog extracurricular, and online magazine (it would be 5 if you’ll add my personal life).

For this Show and Tell post, I’ll let you have a peek into my life as a student/blogger!

As said before, it’s hard to manage both schools works and blog works and add some extracurricular activities from school and an online magazine. Basically, the formula for a very stressful life is blog plus school.

One very hard task to do is organizing and managing. It’s really hard to be so freaking organized so I’ll praise you right now if you can organize everything then add managing the tasks you just organized. It takes discipline for you to manage a lot of tasks in one day because there’s a lot of distractions. Your phone, your annoying little sister or brother or your cravings. Everything can be a distraction so it takes a lot of discipline for you to avoid these distractions.

Now, whining aside. I know I’ve said it’s a very stressful life but IT’S FUN! I seriously think that there’s still fun in this student/blogger lifestyle. I love to learn new things and discover and just let my curiosity out and do that in school, and I love to write and just get my thoughts out there and blogging is a great medium for that.

Also, with this kind of lifestyle, I’m also stepping out of my comfort zone which I seriously think is a scary thing to do but I believe in the saying that great things never came from comfort zones. Also, with this, I’m also learning to be adventurous and to take risks.

I know this is so cliché but it’s so true! If you’re not organized at all, everything would be such a huge mess!

I always keep a notebook where I always write all the assignments and projects I need to do or exams I need to study for. I also write some blog posts ideas. I also write some tasks I need to do about the online magazine. I write to-do lists each day and do at least the 3 most important things to do in the lists. Just to make sure, I also write the to-do lists on sticky notes (thank you to the person who invented sticky notes) or in my phone. This kind of stuffs really helps me to get organized and get through the day nicely!

So grab a notebook or a journal or a planner and write all the things you need to do and sort them out. Always write a To-Do list and make sure to them, prioritize and focus on what’s important, and you’re good to go!

It takes tons and I mean TONS (!!!) of patience. As I said before, the student/blogger lifestyle is very stressful so a bucket of patience and another extra bucket would be needed.

As for me, I don’t have the enough patience and I tend to be always frustrated at things and stuff so what I always do sleep, eat and drink. I don’t really know why but sleeping, eating and drinking just helps me to calm my nerves down.

I hope you enjoy this post! I’ll see you soon! Bye!

Spectacular: Finding Audrey

I’ve been wanting this book since last year so I put it on my Christmas wishlist. Guess what? I received this book on Christmas from my grandparents. I finished this book on one sitting (yes, book review delayed!) and it was fantastic!

An anxiety disorder disrupts fourteen-year-old Audrey’s daily life. She has been making slow but steady progress with Dr. Sarah, but when Audrey meets Linus, her brother’s gaming teammate, she is energized. She connects with him. Audrey can talk through her fears with Linus in a way she’s never been able to do with anyone before. As their friendship deepens and her recovery gains momentum, a sweet romantic connection develops, one that helps not just Audrey but also her entire family. {Goodreads}

I finished this book on one sitting as I can’t stop reading it. The story was so immersive with Audrey’s narration. This book tackles anxiety in a light way without disrespecting the topic which I appreciate very much!

Audrey is such an engaging narrator. She’s the reason why I find this book so interesting, why I finished this book in a span of under 10 hours and basically why I love this book! Linus is also an amazing character, kind and compassionate while still being a realistic character.

Frank, on the other hand, is such a funny character. Frank is Audrey’s gaming obsessed brother. He’s one of the reason why this book is humurous. Another reason for this book to be funny is their Mom. Their mom is comical yet still likeable.

But one thing I really appreciate about this book and probably the main reason why this book is lovable, light and humorous is the family dynamics. I can understand and relate to having a Mom who’s overprotective and having a brother who’s to obsessed with gaming.

As other book reviewers, I was also worried about the romance part of this book since this book also handles mental health issues. I don’t want this book to turn where love magically cure mental illness. Thank god that didn’t happen. Linus provides support for Audrey but it still takes a lot of effort for Audrey. The author acknowledge that Linus can’t solve Audrey’s problem.

Speaking of romance, the dynamics between Audrey and Linus are realistic. The author acknowledges that  dating isn’t easy and this is evidently shown in the book as they both experienced up and downs in their relationship.

Finding Audrey is an awesome read providing you a fresh and humorous take on mental illness. I recommend everyone on reading this if you haven’t!

I hope you enjoyed this book review! Have you read Finding Audrey? What are your thoughts about the book?

I’m officially fifteen and yes, if it’s not obvious enough, it’s my birthday! I’m kinda freaking out as I think being fifteen is a big deal. In commemoration of me being officially fifteen, here 15 things I learned in my fifteen years!

  8.  Take good care of things that you value.
  9.  There are people who loves you and adore you. Your are not hated and alone.
  10.  Life sucks but not all the time. It can be full of happiness too.

My Top 5 TV Shows

If you have been following my blog since the beginning or if you really know me, you know that I love watching (and binge-watching) TV series. If you don’t know, now you do! If I have a free time, the thing I would is watch a series.

I watch a lot of TV shows (and I mean a LOT! I’m not exaggerating) and I want to share you my top 5. It’s so hard to narrow it to only 5 because all of the series are really good but here we are Here are my top 5 TV shows!

Game of Thrones is obviously my first choice. This show is the adaptation of George R.R Martin’s book series “Song of Ice and Fire” where families of monarchs and elites fight a deadly game (hence Game of Thrones) for control of the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros and sit on the Iron Throne.

This show is one of the best out there. It has a very compelling story! Come on, royalties fighting to control the Seven Kingdoms while having dragons and ice zombies threaten the whole kingdom, don’t tell me it’s very awesome. Not only that, this show has a powerful cast – Lena Heady (Cersei), Emilia Clarke (Daenerys) and Kit Harrington (Jon Snow) to name a few.

Legion, based on the Marvel comics, tells the story of David who thought he has schizophrenia all along, until he mets Syd. He gets involved with Melanie Bird who shows him that he has powers.

Another great TV show! The story isn’t some typical superhero story where there’s a big bad and it depends on the hero to stop the villain. It provides a fresh take on the hero story. This show also portrays the psychological aspect (as David is a telepath and he has “another personality”, you’ll see what I mean if you watch the show!) in an amazing way using lighting and technical aspects to display the mood. The cast is amazing too -Dan Stevens as David, Aubrey Plaza as Lenny and Rachel Keller as Syd.

Netflix’s Jessica Jones tells a darker and mysterious story of Jessica Jones, an ex-superhero turned private investigator, who suffers PTSD after a tragedy. She wants to do good but her priority is her apartment and getting through each rather than the safety of the world.

Just like Legion, this provides a fresh take on the hero story with a dark and mysterious story which I LOVE. This is something new for Marvel and it’s a risk but it pays. It’s also dark (I love stories that are dark) because it adds more flare to the story. Just like Legion, Jessica Jones also has a psychological aspect which they portray well.

Another Netflix show, Daredevil shows the story of Matt Murdock, lawyer at day and vigilante by night. Blinded by a mysterious chemical in a childhood accident, the chemical gave him heightened senses which he use to fight crime in Hell’s Kitchen.

Even though this superhero TV show isn’t something like Legion, it’s still an amazing TV show. What I appreciate is that the story is immersive and the characters are very well developed which makes you feel connected to the character.

97 years ago, a nuclear Armageddon destroyed civilization and the only survivors are on the Ark, 12 international spaceships unified together with 4000 people after three generations. As the Ark’s supplies dwindles, the leaders dropped 100 juvenile criminals on Earth. The 100 later finds out that people, called Grounders, have survived the nuclear Armageddon over the centuries.

I recently just finished its season 4 and it’s amazing. One thing I really like about The 100 is that every season has a very interesting story arc, from Mount Weather (season 2) to Praimfaya or a radiation wave (season 4), which keeps you engaged and immersed in the show. They also has  very well developed characters with different amazing internal conflicts.

So, that’s my Top 5 TV series. I hope you enjoyed this post and tell me, what’s your favorite TV shows and do you have any recommendations? See you soon, bye!

Not Enough: Red Queen

Before reading this post, I want to make a quick promotion. You know I run an online mag/group blog called The Artistics! It’s a medium for us to express our creativity. Well, we’re holding a member search! If you’re interested in joining us, click HERE!

It’s been a long time since I’ve done a book review. My last book review was a review to The Sun Is Also A Star by Nicola Yoon (which I loved) which was published at January. That long huh?

Today, I’ll be reviewing Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard. My friend has been recommending this since last year and I actually want to read it. I heard a lot of good reviews about it and my friend has been crazy about it but the problem. When I finished this book, I was a bit disappointed. I thought it was pretty average.

The Reds are commoners, ruled by a Silver elite in possession of god-like superpowers. And to Mare Barrow, a seventeen-year-old Red girl from the poverty-stricken Stilts, it seems like nothing will ever change.

That is, until she finds herself working in the Silver Palace. Here, surrounded by the people she hates the most, Mare discovers that, despite her red blood, she possesses a deadly power of her own. One that threatens to destroy the balance of power.

Fearful of Mare’s potential, the Silvers hide her in plain view, declaring her a long-lost Silver princess, now engaged to a Silver prince. Despite knowing that one misstep would mean her death, Mare works silently to help the Red Guard, a militant resistance group, and bring down the Silver regime.

But this is a world of betrayal and lies, and Mare has entered a dangerous dance – Reds against Silvers, prince against prince, and Mare against her own heart. {Goodreads}

As I said, I felt that this book was just “surface level”. The concept of the book is cliche and I didn’t like Mare Barrow, the main character, that much. The story was a slow paced but it surprised me in the end.

As said, I didn’t like Mare Barrow. Her opinion about how the Silvers always oppressed the Red and use them is repetitive which makes it so annoying! Also, her attitude got a bit irritating. I could understand why she feels these kind of things and emotions but it’s sometimes annoying. One thing I liked is that how the author evidently showed that Mare isn’t a perfect character- she’s flawed which makes her realistic.

Cal and Maven are characters that I liked. They both showed insights on how Silver lives. Their relationship with one another is pretty realistic with all the sibling rivalry. Kilorn was not a character I liked. Although, without him, the story wouldn’t even exist but Kilorn is like a Gale (Hunger Games) equivalent of this book which I don’t like.

The concept of this story is cliche but I do like how the society is split into two – Reds and Silvers. It feels like a mix of X-Men plus Divergent plus Game of Thrones. I love those but if you combine them, you’ll get a cliche book but to be honest, it didn’t bother me at all.

The plot was inconsistent. At first it was interesting then it became slow paced, which I have problems with, then it got intense. The action parts at later end of the book was my favorite. I was on the edge of my sit.

It’s also great that we got to see how the world and society of this book is trying to portray. In the next book, I wish it could be expanded more.

I have mix emotions with the writing. The writing was average but I can still understand what it’s trying to say and express but sometimes, I don’t get what’s happening especially the Queenstrial part.

There’s a lot of flaws about Red Queen but still, I liked it but I didn’t think it was great or a book to be on my Top 5 but do I recommend this? Of course! Will I reread it? Yes! I give this book 3.5 stars.

I hope you enjoyed reading this book review. Also, if you’re interested in joining our group in The Artistic, make sure to go to The Artistics blog, don’t be shy! I’ll see you soon, bye!

  • What is the best thing you like about blogging?

What I like about blogging is just I have the chance to write about things that I love or to write about my feelings and express it.

Definitely the sunset. It’s just so cool!

  • The stars or the moon?

Stars! For me, stars are more interesting.

I’m guessing you’re asking if I would read the book or just watch the adaptation, amirite? If that’s it, I’ll read the book. I usually hate movies based from books

I’m a mix to be honest.  I think it’s called “ambivert”.

  • What is the best thing that has ever happened to you?

Maybe the best thing that has ever happened to me is when Tyler Oakley liked my tweet. I knew that Tyler was going to be a guest on the Ellen show and I tweeted my reaction and the next minute, I saw a notification that he liked it and I gasped!

I do but it’s only because someone told me to.

That’s all! I hope you enjoy reading this post. I would see you soon! Bye!

My Blogging Status (2)

Once again, I had lacked as a blogger and I feel so guilty. I haven’t been posting and interacting with my fellow bloggers and I abandoned my blog.

Last time I made this kind of post, I promised that I will focus on my blog and get my priorities straight and now, that seems like a false promise. I had my reasons for being absent which was explained on this post but that’s not enough.

The problem is still me. I am still having problems with keeping my priorities straight and being productive. All I do now is stay in bed and be unproductive without realizing my responsibility with my blog and now, I’m kind of beating myself for it.

I feel like I’m always letting my readers down and, I make promises I can’t keep. Another thing is that I feel uninspired to do blogging anymore, that I have lost my interest on writing and publishing posts and earlier this day, I’ve thought of deleting this blog for good.

It seems like I have abuse my summer vacation to do nothing responsible and unproductive and writing this, I’m beating myself up for these terrible mistakes I did and I can’t help it. I made a promise in the past to focus on blogging and what did I do? The opposite of it!

The worse is I feel like I’m not going to improve. I’ve been a lousy blogger and I feel like I’m not going to develop into the responsible blogger I once was. I feel like I’m stuck on being irresponsible, lazy, uncreative, inefficient mess.

I’m afraid of making another promise to focus on my blog because I feel like I’m not going to fulfill it again but one thing is I’m going to try. I will try on improving myself. I will try to go back on track. It’s not going to be easy but I’ll try. I’m not going to make any promises but right now, after pouring my feeling and beating myself up, I feel determined.

And also next time, I will notify you all if I’m going on a break (I should definitely do that!) and I’m going to stop whining.

More post is coming your way! I hope you enjoyed this post even though I evidently beat myself up and whine all throughout the post. I’ll see you soon, bye!

Where Was I?

I have been away from blogging for weeks now and that’s because of an unexpected vacation.

Weeks ago, we went to Baguio, a province here in my country. It was only for four days. I was with my cousins, my aunt and uncle and with my grandparents. When we were about to go home, my grandmother asked me to stay at their house and take a vacation there. I couldn’t say no so I said yes.

That was the unexpected vacation.

When we’re about to leave Baguio, I was expecting to go home, not at my grandparent’s house. Nevertheless, that was the reason I was away from blogging.

I had access to WiFi, yes, but what I don’t have access is to WordPress and my email (for The Artistics and other stuff). I didn’t bring my laptop and my phone is useless when I want to use it for blogging or my emails.

Nevertheless, I am back but not for long. Next month, I need to go back to school because it’s the start of the school year and oh boy, this upcoming school is going to be tougher but I will use my remaining days (it sounds like I have an inevitable death which is yes, I have and it’s called “school year”) to blog again.

Also, because I took a vacation in Baguio (and took a lot of photos), I will post about that and other stuffs like book reviews which I missed doing!

I hope you enjoyed this post. I’ll see you all in the next post! Bye!

The Uniquely Me Tag

Before doing the tag and thanking who nominated me, I just wanted to say that I’ve created a new Instagram account. I’ve deleted my first one just to start over, I’m basically a perfectionist. Since this is a new account, I haven’t posted a thing but pictures will be coming! Make sure to follow by clicking HERE! I kind of followback (emphasis on the kind of)

Thank you Regina from Diversion3000 for nominating me to do this fun tag! Regina is one of my co-members on The Artistics and I recommend that you should follow her blog because it’s genuinely amazing! Also, she’s funny, interesting and a friendly person! Go check her blog and follow it!

Also, Elm made this tag so I just want to say thank you to Elm for creating this amazing tag! If you don’t know her (are you living on a rock or woke up from  a century-long hibernation?), she’s an amazing and wonderful person and also brilliant!

Now, let’s jump into this, shall we?

1. Thank the person that nominated you for this tag and link to their blog (spread the love, basically).
2. Write as many things that are unique to you as possible: these can be things that you do, say, like or have that make you different to other people or let you stand out. It can be what defines you as a person, a little thing about you that is just simply you or something little known that you think makes you up as a person.
3. Nominate up to 10 bloggers or as many as you like; there isn’t a limit.
4. You can take this tag as seriously or non-seriously as you like; you can laugh whilst doing it or feel contemplative: this is about you, after all.
5. After you’ve written this and if you ever feel like there’s nothing to you but what other people have already said and done, look back to your post and remember that it isn’t true.

Unique Things About Me:

  • I consider my ability to finish one season of a TV show in one day as a talent because I think it is! Recently, I just finish season 1 and season 2 of iZombie, both in one day!
  • I love watching and binge watching (the two terms are different) TV shows but it’s not just any love, like I have a commitment to watching these shows, especially the ones I like. I know, weird, but most of my days compose of binge watching!
  • I like studying about mythology, preferably Greek and Norse, thanks to the books of Rick Riordan! Ever since I’ve read his books, I’ve been fascinated about myths and stories about mythological creatures, and gods and goddesses. Shoot me any question about Greek or Norse myth and I may know the answer!
  • I love anything aesthetic! I’ve always been into aesthetics since I learned graphic designing. It’s just so beautiful and aesthetically pleasing.
  • I have never been out of my country. Very tragic, I know!
  • It’s always been a habit for me to talk to myself about my theories and opinions on something, most of them are about TV shows sometimes.
  • I love anything about art and design. This is something similar with the my love for aesthetics. Since I’ve been doing graphic design, I just loved art and designs since!
  • I love watching baking videos on Youtube but never tried to the recipe because the oven in my house is broken.
  • I have a crazy sweet tooth, and I mean CRAZY!
  • I always say “Pop and EDM are so mainstream” but whenever a pop song or an edm is released, I always like it.
  • I attempt to dance like Lorde whenever Green Light plays.

The Nominees:

It seems like everyone I know has done this tag so if you haven’t done this and you want to, feel free to do it. It’s a fun and amazing tag to do!

I hope you enjoyed reading this post. Again, thank you to Regina and Elm (make sure to check their links)! I’ve enjoyed writing and doing this tag! Don’t forget to follow my new instagram account!
